Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The Central Processing Unit is the brain of the computer. The CPU will interface, through the Motherboard, with all the other peripherals to make fast computations. The CPU tells the other peripherals the tasks they need to carry out and the CPU will compute the findings and readings it recieves back. You need a CPU to have a working computer.

The CPU is a computer chip about 2" large that is slotted and fixed into place on a Motherboard. Fixed on top of a CPU you will find a CPU Fan. This fan cools the chip as the CPU will over heat otherwise. The CPU when being cooled will run at temperatures between 40°C - 70°C.

At Jektec we use AMD Processors. AMD stands for Advanced Micro Devices. There are other companies who produce computer processors but we at Jektec prefer the AMD as they produce excellent benchmarks (working speed), they are cost effective and great value for money.

CPU's come in different speeds and it is advisable to seek advice on which CPU to buy. A powerful CPU would be needed for High End Calculations, e.g. Computer Aided Design, where a CPU that would be less powerful would be good for low calculations, e.g. word processing.

AMD are a leading global provider of Innovative Microprocessor Solutions.
