Network Card / Modem

Network Cards and Modems are different peripherals but can do similar jobs.

A Network Card will give you the ability to connect one computer to another computer within a close proximity either by Wireless technology or by Wired technology.

A Modem will give you the ability to connect your computer to many other computers across the world which will give you the ability to access the internet etc.

Both Network Cards and Modems can be Internal and External to your Base Computer. These can connect via a cable for external peripherals or connect via one of the PCI slots on a Motherboard for internal.

There are many different Networking abilities and many different Modems that can be purchased for different circumstances, please see below for examples.

56K Modem

These modems are the oldest type of Modem on the market today. They will access the internet at an average to slow speed.

Speed: Average between 1.0kps - 5.0Kps

ADSL Modem

An ADSL Modem is the latest technology for connecting to the internet. These devices will give you some of the best speeds to date at a good affordable price.

Speed: Average between 50.0kbs - 500.00kbs

Network Card

Network Cards will give you the ability to connect computers together within a certain range. Some are Wireless and some use cables to connect.

Network cards come in different speeds. Advice should be sought before buying.

Network Router

A Network Router would be needed if you wish to have computers connecting to each other and have the facility to share information.

Network Cards would be needed for each computer and a Router would re-direct the information to the correct place.

ASDL Network Router

These routers can have the same facilities as a Network Router but can also have the facility of an ASDL modem.

This enables more than one computer to be able to connect to the internet at the same time. Some routers will support up to 255 computers connecting to one Router or ASDL Router.

Please seek advice before buying any of these products.

All products for Networking, other than the 56K modem, can be installed as Wireless. This would mean that your network would not need to have cables installed, the network would send and recieve information by radio or, soon to come, Bluetooth technology.

All Modems will need connection to an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to connect to the internet. Jektec are not an ISP but can offer unbiased advice for which service would be right for you.
